Research is a systematic, controlled, empirical, and critical investigation of hypothetical propositions about presumed relationships among natural and psychological phenomena. It is driven by curiosity and structured scientific inquiry.

Context of Discovery

The initial, creative phase of research where new ideas, insights, questions, and hypotheses are born out of curiosity, intuition, or literature review.

PHASE 2

Context of Justification

The empirical testing phase where hypotheses are subjected to rigorous data collection, statistical verification, and peer review to defend and share results.

Step 1: Identification of the Problem

Ask a question or identify a need arising from curiosity. Rephrase the problem meaningfully. Evaluate feasibility considering available funds, time, and expertise. Review literature to avoid duplication.

Step 2: Formulating a Hypothesis

Develop a tentative, testable statement predicting relationships between variables based on theory, previous research, or observation. Formulate prior to data collection.

Step 3: Identifying, Manipulating & Controlling Variables

Define Independent Variables (IV), Dependent Variables (DV), and Extraneous Variables. Use operational definitions to specify and measure variables clearly.

Step 4: Formulating a Research Design

Create a blueprint for testing hypotheses while ensuring maximum control of extraneous variables. Include logistical arrangements, sampling strategy, and timeframe.

Step 5: Constructing Devices for Observation and Measurement

Develop or select appropriate research tools (questionnaires, psychometric scales, observation schedules). Construct new tools if existing ones are unavailable.

Step 6: Sample Selection and Data Collection

Select a representative sample of the population. Choose appropriate data collection methods (experiments, surveys, observation). Administer tools individually or in groups, managing recruitment and training costs.

Step 7: Data Analysis and Interpretation

Analyse data using statistical (univariate, bivariate, multivariate) or qualitative techniques. Select parametric or non-parametric tests aiming to evaluate the null hypothesis ($H_0$) against alternative hypothesis ($H_1$).

Step 8: Drawing Conclusions

Generalise findings to the target population. Relate conclusions to the original theory or previous research findings, modifying theories if new evidence requires it.
